So the new Star Fox is out and despite my lack of optimism I will still pick it up because man it's been too long. Star Fox on the Super Nintendo was the FIRST video game I ever played... or at least the first video game I remember playing (I MIGHT have played Super Mario Land on Game Boy but my memories are vague fragments at this point). Star Fox was called Star Wing in the United Kingdom, and that's the cart I own. Was a really amazing game at the time, first true 3D polygonal game on a 16 bit machine. I loved that game, still consider to be one of the best rail shooters ever made. Star Fox 64 was really a remake of it and the realisation of its true vision, again a game that is amazing and eternally playable. It's even better on the 3DS and a game that's just easy to fall back to at any time. Having missed out on the Gamecube (the others can probably fill in for those), my next game was the shockingly atrocious Star Fox Command on the DS. Holy hell, it was so bad I nearly cried. Why the hell would you turn one of the greatest shooters into a real time strategy game, with some of the ugliest art ever. Now we have Star Fox Zero co developed with Platinum Games (Bayonetta, Anarchy Reigns, Metal Gear Rising, Legend of Korra etc). Their track record is stellar but I cant help but feel pessimistic about Star Fox Zero. It looks great but I feel like it is trying way too many things and therefore lacking focus and polish. The fact that it forces you to use Game pad + Gyro controls with no option to use the Wii Pro Controller, worries me. From what Kane told me, the controls are uncomfortable. How do you guys feel about the new game and franchise in general? Share some of your Star Fox memories/history.

Star Fox is one of those game franchises I love but can't say anything too good about it after Lylat wars (Star fox 64). I still play through Star Fox 64 every couple of months because it still holds up as fun quick game even today. It might have been one of my first games as well, Since I remember playing it a bunch as a kid but don't remember when I actually got my hands on it Sadly after Star Fox 64 the series kinda went a bit wonky. Star Fox adventures was a Zelda like adventure game which while I really enjoyed it as a stand alone game I hated that it wasn't at all what I wanted from a star fox game. Kinda like that Banjo Kazooie Nuts and bolts game, Fun vehicle builder but a terrible Banjo game. Star Fox assault was a step in the right direction. Bringing back Arwing combat from the old games and in those missions it was a lot of fun. It also shook up the team dynamic by having Peppy as mission control due to age and his position in the Arwing team was taken up by new comer Crystal who was the damsel in distress of Adventures. Then came the ground walking missions which were completely awful, Combining poor 3rd person shooter controls with just plain boring combat which sucked most of the fun I had out of that game. These missions also took up over half of the games playtime. Coincidentally the third Star wars Rogue Squadron game also had dreadful 3rd person walking based combat, I guess there was a trend in the industry somewhere? I will say it did have a great soundtrack though with new tracks and remade versions of old Starfox64 songs for when the team went back to the old locations. I don't have the new game but from the little bit of it I've played so far suggests to me that the poor/annoying controls may ruin what could have been a fun game. It seems to be a trend for Nintendo to focus so hard on gimmicky control schemes that sometimes their games feel like I'm playing the controller and not the game. Kinda makes me glad Nintendo have never gotten around to making another F-Zero *shudder*.

Having played the first two missions and some of the training exercises. I can honestly say the controls aren't as bad as I imagined but man you have to recalibrate your target crosshair frequently because the gyro controls tend to fall apart, but with a push of a button it gets fixed. Thing is, it happens so frequently that Peppy constantly reminds you "press Y to recalibrate!". The controls are particularly painful during the free roaming sections.
Apart from that, the game itself is basically Star Fox 64 reimagined. Same story, same locations, hell even similar bosses. So Star Fox, Star Fox 64, and Star Fox Zero are telling the first chapter of the Star Fox saga. I do enjoy it, the visuals are really good. But yea will be spending more time with this one.

I've been playing this lately. Only just finished the main game once so I've only played about half the levels but I really like it. It's my first Star Fox game apart from playing the first level on N64 a couple of times back in the 90s. I'll admit I mostly bought it for Platinum. It does have that Platinum touch to it with the scoring and fairly steep learning curve. I feel the controls are really starting to click after putting around 7 hours in so far. I can really see the potential of them after you get the game down. It certainly isn't friendly to newcomers though, I felt pretty hopeless during the first few levels but at least the difficulty is fairly low to accommodate people learning the controls. I think there will be lots of replayability with the arcade mode as it plays like Outrun with a huge branching list of stages and it records your hit number and time for each path you take. Certainly a great game to come back to often. The co-op mode looks to be really fun too, it reminds me of the space level in Gunstar Heroes where one person controls the ship and the other the turrets. I only wish it had online play. But yeah so far it has been a surprisingly fun game and I'm looking forward to playing it some more. This song really makes the bosses feel intimidating I still can't beat the route B boss in Corneria...

The more I play Star Fox the more I'm starting to appreciate its "quirks", which is a very Platinum Games thing for sure as Guitarwolf mentioned. I just feel the controls fall apart in the all-range mode. I never liked those sections in Star Fox 64 and they're even more painful in Zero.
It's still a fun game, mission structure feels varied. Still working through my first playthrough.

So...as someone who has never played Starfox, and has never looked into it as a video game (at all), could you fans please detail to me the pros of it? I want to be "won over" so to speak, because I see the new game around so much, and I can't bring myself to just jump in blind. I also dont have it in me to do any research, so in layman's terms please gentlemen; sell me Starfox.

Honestly Frank
Star Fox Zero is probably the worst place to start.
Star Fox 64 on 3DS is the best place to start and not to mention cheap to find. Looks and runs great on the system.
Now as for whether or not you should... ask yourself
1. Do I love epic boss battles?
2. Do I love a no-nonsense and polished flight action game?
3. Do I love Star Wars enough to enjoy what is pretty much Nintendo's Star Wars?
4. Do I love simple pick up and play gameplay taking place in amazing set pieces?
If the answer to all the above questions is. Yes, Yes, Yes, YES! then go for it.

Still working through my first playthrough. I feel the same way about all-range mode. That's why I'm having so much trouble with the Corneria alternative boss because you have lasers firing at you all over and this plasma shield expands every 10 seconds. You're forced to look at the gamepad to shoot the weakpoints and then you lose your awareness of your surroundings. It works well when you're on rails but not so well in the all-range mode. Maybe it just takes some more practice. So...as someone who has never played Starfox, and has never looked into it as a video game (at all), could you fans please detail to me the pros of it? I also dont have it in me to do any research, so in layman's terms please gentlemen; sell me Starfox. It is a hard game to recommend as it has such mixed responses from people. Some people really like it but others can't stand it. It all comes down to the controls I think. The learning curve is pretty steep due to the control scheme and combining that with the fairly short length of the game it's not a good game to only beat once. If you enjoy pick up and play style games with lots of replayability though, I think it's a really rewarding experience. The branching missions means there's lots of different ways to beat arcade mode and it records your time and hit number.

Jahan, I think a lot of my dislike of Zero so far comes from the poor all-range mode controls since I really enjoyed them in 64 and Assault, The Independence day inspired mission Katina is always a blast to play through. Yeah, Now that I have my hands on the game I've only played the first mission so far and the need to switch looking between screens got annoying fast. Maybe I should try various sitting positions? Frank, Adding my recommendation with starting with Starfox 64 since it's the best in the series by far with an extra point. 5. Do I love constantly team killing a certain frog based wingmate? Don't worry, You soon will

amen to that Zephy
I just cant bring myself to looking at the game pad even if the targeting is more "accurate" as the game claims. I do like controlling the mini robot to solve puzzles, that part is kinda neat.

All very good answers, guys!
See I just don't think this is the game for me. I have a very odd taste in video games that kind of leave me high and dry for the most part during your average video game release season.
The only point I answered "YES" to out of the ones you listed, Jahan, was the first one. Who DOESN'T love epic boss battles? The rest, it's just not my thing. I'm not too big a fan of Star Wars, I've never been a fan of flight video games, and the other two are really ones I can't answer because I'm very fickle, my likes and dislikes change on a daily basis. One day I'm super into JRPGs that or unforgiving like SMT, the next day I'm playing an old Naruto side-scroller on my GBA wherein which I can just mash buttons and hope for the best.
One day in the near future I'm simply going to have to sit down and try to play a starfox game. Be it Zero or 64.
