Hello fellow snappers! I'm Guitarwolf aka Dave aka long time lurker first time poster. Have been following Snapthirty since it started! I'm a friend of Jahan's but I also know Frankie from Twitter.
I should tell you a little about myself... I'm 28 from the Gold Coast and have been watching anime a lot since the early 2000s. I mostly enjoy psychological, thriller, horror and cyberpunk anime although I watch a bit of everything. I'm also a huge fan of Asian cinema especially the more darker and off-beat stuff from the likes of Takashi Miike, Takeshi Kitano and Sion Sono. I play a lot of games too and I'm currently hooked on Dark Souls 3 and Hatsune Miku Project Diva X.
Anyway I look forward to interacting with you guys on the new forum!

Welcome! So you're into all the dark stuff? Now I know who to turn to for recommendations! I've long been seeking recommendations for good horror anime. I don't have a lot of time to get to old stuff - only just now watching Shiki after it was recommended perhaps a year ago to me, but suggestions are always welcome. Same for movies. I've only seen a handful of Miike Takashi movies but Audition and Gozu definitely left lasting impressions on me (or at least, the last parts of them) and Suicide Club had to be added to my DVD collection as soon as I watched it. Look forward to chatting here more without worrying about character limits!

You know, I once went through a fairly long phase in my youth where I really enjoyed the darkest of the dark; I'm talking blood, gore, and everything in between, but now that I'm an old man I'm more for the wholesome stuff, even though I love a good dark thriller ever once in a while. Like you, GW, I love Takashi Miike, he is not only my favorite Japanese director, but he's my favorite director period. What of his stuff is your favorite? I'm a huge fan of Japanese Juvenile Delinquent Culture so I love Crows Zero. I image you're more a fan of Ichi The Killer, because of it's more dark nature? I also love the film Why Don't You Play In Hell by Sion Sono, unfortunately though that's the only film of his that I've seen. Any recommendations?

Yea Guitarwolf and I go wayyyy back, met at the PALGN (R.I.P) forums back when I was writing for them. This was back in 2009! I have yet to meet him in real life Welcome to the forums! Hopefully this place steadily grows. How are you finding Dark Souls III? It's been that long? Time sure flies! Hopefully we can meet up soon in real life . I'm loving Dark Souls 3 so far, I'm only about half way as I'm taking it slow to savour it. This is the last game in the Dark Souls trilogy so it's kind of bittersweet to see it end... Look forward to chatting here more without worrying about character limits! Gozu is an amazing film. I don't think I've seen anything so surreal and complex before, definitely one of Miike's best. I also recently rewatched Audition as it just got released on blu ray. It's still as great as I remember and the ending is probably the only movie scene that makes me squeamish I could certainly recommend some more Miike, he's a really varied director and covers heaps of genres. Suicide Club is actually the first film I saw from Sion Sono too and he's become my favourite director. Be sure to check out Noriko's Dinner Table as it's a sequel to the Suicide Club but it's also a very different type of film. I've had Shiki on my watch list for ages so definitely have to get around to that soon. Definitely hit me up for any recommendations anytime! Welcome! You know, I once went through a fairly long phase in my youth where I really enjoyed the darkest of the dark; I'm talking blood, gore, and everything in between, but now that I'm an old man I'm more for the wholesome stuff, even though I love a good dark thriller ever once in a while. I also love the film Why Don't You Play In Hell by Sion Sono, unfortunately though that's the only film of his that I've seen. Any recommendations? Funny that you mention Ichi The Killer because that's actually how I really got into more extreme movies and Takashi Miike. I had dabbled in some anime with the likes Perfect Blue, Akira, Ninja Scroll but it wasn't until a friend recommended Ichi The Killer and Battle Royale that I really found my love for dark films, especially of the Eastern variety. I'm a big fan of the Crows Zero films particularly the soundtracks. It's a genre I'd really like to watch more of. Another film comes to mind that's similar but a bit more serious called Blue Spring. I really enjoyed that one. Have you seen it? Please throw any recommendations my way! I love Why Don't You Play In Hell too. Seeing as you like that one you have to watch Love Exposure, it's also by Sion Sono. It's a four hour long epic about love, lust, betrayal, perversion, religion... there's literally nothing like it. Even though it's four hours long I never once felt it dragged, it's really that good. It's easily his best film in my opinion and possibly my favourite film of all time. Anyway thanks for all the warm welcomes everyone

Yep, that scene in Audition is about the only time I've *almost* found something unwatchable. I guess it lost the movie disconnect because it looked SO real. Brilliant piece of film making. I have so much love for the weirdness in Suicide Club - I actually have a short film somewhere on my computer of recreating the bowling alley scene (without the violence, mostly just the silliness of Rolly's character (can't remember his name) and his great entrance, sparkly shoes and the way he sat in that chair (before suddenly obtaining a guitar and singing)). I have not heard about Noriko's Dinner Table, I shall definitely check it out!
